Shrub and Tree Care

How to Care for Trees and Shrubs in Winter

Winter in Dayton, OH, can be tough on your trees and shrubs. From freezing temperatures to heavy snow, the cold months present unique challenges for maintaining healthy landscaping. At Lawn Plus LLC, we understand that proper winter care is essential to protect your investment and ensure your trees and shrubs thrive come spring. Here’s how to keep your landscaping in great shape during the winter months.

Protect Against Frost Damage

Freezing temperatures can cause significant damage to young or tender trees and shrubs. Wrap vulnerable plants with burlap or frost cloth to shield them from cold winds and frost. For additional protection, mulch around the base of trees and shrubs to insulate their roots and regulate soil temperature.

Prune Carefully

Winter is an ideal time for pruning many trees and shrubs, as they’re dormant during this season. Pruning during dormancy helps prevent the spread of diseases and pests. Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches to improve the plant’s structure and prepare it for healthy spring growth. However, avoid heavy pruning of spring-blooming shrubs, as this could reduce their blooms.

Monitor Snow and Ice

Heavy snow and ice can weigh down branches, leading to breakage or damage. Gently brush off snow using a broom or your hands, but avoid shaking branches, as this can cause further harm. For ice-covered branches, let the ice melt naturally to prevent additional stress on the plant.

Prevent Winter Burn

Evergreens are particularly vulnerable to winter burn, which occurs when they lose moisture faster than they can absorb it from frozen soil. Water your evergreens deeply in late fall before the ground freezes to ensure they have enough moisture to sustain them through winter. You can also apply an anti-desiccant spray to minimize water loss.

Keep an Eye on Pests

Winter doesn’t mean pests disappear entirely. Rodents like mice and voles often chew on the bark of trees and shrubs when food is scarce. Wrap the base of your trees with protective tree guards to prevent this damage. Also, inspect your landscape for signs of overwintering pests and take action as needed.

Avoid Salt Damage

De-icing salts used on driveways and sidewalks can harm nearby trees and shrubs. Protect your landscaping by applying a barrier, such as a burlap screen, or using salt alternatives like sand or gravel. If salt does come into contact with your plants, flush the area with water to dilute its effects.
